I asked him to stop the music,
the raunchy, thrusting drums,
sounding tinnish, cheap, back
alley, but beautifully persistent
tom-tomming so that I could
open the giant egg on my right,
the casket for Mother’s corpse,
for I needed silence to bring her
back properly, to show her how
her son had survived her be-
littlements, and with great
alacrity, had shed the alligator
skin which she had poured on
in layers of muddy martyrdom,
and show her how I had erupted
from cages, had somehow begun to
like myself for brief moments, all
of which I hoped would allow her
to rest easily in hell rather than
trapsing this earth, working
diligently to finally, decisively

Lucid, lean and linear. Perfect craft here.
Excellent poem full of emotion and amazing descriptions like “muddy martyrdom” and “erupted from cages”.

Kinda sums up with my mother too but I was still pained as her home hospice nurse last five weeks of her life as she repeatedly expressed her loved so I guess she did her best despite the persona. The turmoil remains unresolved.

Mine was Jeckyll and Hyde, but in the end, I love her with all of my heart.

Icy – and reads like a cold woman. makes me appreciative of the mother i did have. also, brings to mind the power of a woman – how in her children she can build up or she can tear down and the damage a parent can inflict. hmm… got me thinking, Carl. “) Great poem!!

Thank you for your comment, Jennifer. I appreciate it. Parenting is terribly difficult, and I think I’ve learned it takes immense energy and compassion. For all of her faults, I know my Mother did her best, and she gave me a lot of great richness in my upbringing.
